Abrasive Blasting Safety
It is important that with every abrasive blasting operation appropriate control measures such as containment, ventilation, and filtration should be used. Just as important is the use of protective equipment such as an abrasive blasting hood, leather gloves, and a respirator.
Avoid inhaling dust. Dust may cause eye and respiratory irritation. It is hazardous to inhale crystalline silica dust. An approved NIOSH or OSHA respiratory device for nuisance dust is recommended. Work areas should be equipped with adequate dust collection or exhaust ventilation. Flush eyes with water to remove dust. Remove to fresh air if dust is inhaled.
Silicosis: NIOSH has warned against the dangers of using silica-based abrasives. When silica-based abrasives are blasted, the particles break apart and can result in airborne dust particles. When inhaled, these dust particles can lodge themselves in lung tissue. The potential result is a condition knows as silicosis.

Cautions: Chemicals may cause irritation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear protective clothing and eye protection. Always use with adequate ventilation.
First Aid: Flush eyes with water. Wash skin with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing. Get medical attention as necessary.
Spills, Leaks and Storage: Contain spills and dispose in suitable container for disposal according local regulations. Do not cut or weld containers. Always observe standard industrial hygiene practices.
